In today’s radio environment the “Club House” audience interaction atmosphere is more important than ever. If we don’t connect with our local audience, in a personable way, we not only run the risk of being preempted by other radio stations & media, we will be.


The most successful radio personalities in the country understand the importance of making their listeners the star of their show by putting them on center stage. This is almost always best achieved by way of audience interaction. There are three steps in creating memorable phone calls:


1. Educating the listener that you want them to be a part of the show is very important. Teaching them through example, that talking to a radio personality on the phone is not a difficult thing. Many people will never attempt this.


2. Using the “out of context” phone editing technique. (When someone calls for one reason and you extract additional information from them on the topic you want to deal with at a later time). This is the most powerful form of audience interaction and the type we should use most frequently. The next method is the “theatrical prop.” (When you call someone you know to comment of a topic or idea, without revealing what your relationship is with them.)


3. Using these calls consistently enough to become know for it. Remember, this interaction can be very brief. You are trying to create the feeling that listeners are very closely dialed in to your station and are ready to participate at the drop of a hat.


After you use these techniques for a while, you will hear how much better your show sounds. It takes a few minutes of extra planning but it is worth it. Make your listener that star and you will create lots of friends!
