Frankie's
Career Capsule
My radio career started in 1986 and the journey has
taken me from Brooklyn NY to Texas, North Carolina and for the past
8 years to my favorite state of all Virginia!
1.
Personally how do you keep the ministry in the “business”?
Personally I don’t see how you can separate it! If I am a Christian
then it should be a part of who I am no matter where I am and this
includes my “business”
2. Overall, how is Christian radio different today,
from 5 years ago?
I
can’t think of an aspect where it isn’t different today and for the
better! Any format has its internal challenges but the sound of
stations across the country has improved 100 fold. God has given us
a message and a platform that’s really making a difference.
3. What do you think are the main characteristics of
today’s Christian radio PD?
I
would have to say an effective PD must be above all a mentor and a
motivator. If you care for and nurture the talents of your team
everyone wins!
4. What criteria do you require for a song to be
played on your station?
What
is the brand expectation of the listener? Find out what they expect
by listening to your station and 9 times out of 10 you will play the
right songs. Then research to make sure you are hitting the bull’s
eye.
5. What kind of promotions work best for Christian
radio?
Promotions with a purpose. Having a desirable prize is nice but what
are we trying to say with our promotion? If you have no other reason
besides it’s a really cool prize most listeners won’t care
6. How do you think Christian Record labels can
better serve Christian radio?
Listen
to what a PD is saying about the individual brand of their radio
stations not just the big dogs. Particularly if the station has a
track record of good ratings or financial success. Certain
songs/artist work everywhere but one size won’t fit all.
7. In your opinion what are the biggest obstacles
facing Christian radio today?
For
individual stations it is the unlimited choices that provide content
very close to yours. With internet and other technologies slicing
the pie we have to constantly ask why would your listener choose to
stay with you?
8. What do you believe is the primary role of the
Christian radio air personality?
Being
a real person living a real life and helping your listener live
theirs
9. What (if any) Christian radio stations do you
consider as innovators today?
God
has really blessed us with so many talented innovators all with
their own special gifts. Overall I believe it’s been a team effort
and the greatest innovator of all is Jesus Christ
10. Where do you see Christian radio in 5 years?
I know
there are many challenges and changes before us but all and all I
must say. The future is so bright I gotta wear shades!!
