1. Tell us about KVNE and your role there ?

Encouragement FM is composed of 2 station: 89.5 KVNE and 91.3 KGLY. In fact last week we celebrated 30 years in East Texas. Our listening audience is comprised over 30 cities but the two main cities are Tyler & Longview.

My role at KVNE/KGLY is Director of Community Connections which mean connecting our listeners to worthy non-profits in the community. In addition I am responsible for all station promotions, social media and marketing & branding. Since we are a smaller station, I have the privilege of wearing my different hats where I continue to learn each and every day!

2. How do you build on the KVNE heritage in Tyler?

What’s great about being at KVNE and KGLY is the unlimited opportunity in this community to reach out to believers and non-believers through different station events or partnering with other ministries who are doing that. We have just touched the surface! In fact, we just hired a Coordinator of Community Connections who will handle all of our KVNE Road Trips and our Volunteer Crew program.

3. Tell us about your new office/studio project?

It’s official! We broke ground on our new studio last month. God has done and is doing amazing things at this station which included raising all the funds necessary in just a few short months. The new studio will be in a highly visible location and will more than double our current studio. One of the most exciting aspects of the new building is the “Community Outreach” room that local ministries will be allowed to use for their events, drives, meetings, bible studies and of course mini-concerts!

4. What are the best variables that make a KVNE promotion?

Our department has developed a test that we weigh all promotions against.
Does it make a difference to a listener?
o Does it encourage a listener to make a difference in someone else’s life?
o Does it point listeners to Jesus Christ?
o Does it support another organization that is making a difference in someone life?

5. What is your most memorable KVNE promotion so far?

My favorite promotions is “Valentines for Kids in the Hospital & Assisted Living Seniors” because it touches so many lives from those individuals who make the cards to those that receive the cards. I also love the fact that it doesn’t cost much, if anything, to participate.
Over 21,000 homemade valentine cards were made by kids, offices, women’s shelters, churches, and senior groups. Our entire staff including volunteers help personally deliver bags of valentine cards and pray with patients/seniors at local nursing homes, veteran’s senior center and numerous hospitals. I could go on and on!

6. Generally speaking to the industry what are the biggest obstacles facing Christian radio today?

The two biggest challenges facing Christian radio are reaching young kids/teen/adults and competition from satellite radio, Pandora and other similar outlets.

7. There are still some big markets without a CCM station, why do you think that is?

That makes me sad! Kids and adults need a Christian choice. What an opportunity!

8. What (if any) Christian radio stations do you consider as innovators today?

KTIS, Z88.3, and KSBJ just to name a few stations. I love it because they always keep the focus on what the listener would want. These stations have all been great mentors to me personally and I couldn’t of done it without their guidance. Thank you Morgan, Carol, Brittany!

9. Where do you see Christian Radio in the next 5 years?

I would hopefully see more youth Christian stations.
