Brian's Career Capsule
Started in 1986 at my hometown Top 40, WCIR in Beckley WV.  Worked country at WAEY in Princeton WV and then in 2000 joined Positive Alternative Radio in Blacksburg VA. In 2001 PAR FM and Spirit FM merged and I joined the team in Lynchburg VA. In 2008 I moved to WCQR in Johnson City TN and in 2012 I joined the staff of HIS radio in Greenville SC

1. Tell us about His Radio, a little history, background, etc) ?

HIS radio has been serving the Carolinas and Georgia for over 30 years, we cover the markets of Greenville, Charleston and Myrtle Beach in SC; Raleigh, Charlotte and Asheville in NC and Savannah in GA.  We are a part of the Radio Training Network (RTN).

2. How was the His Radio name chosen?

From what Iíve heard it involved Jon Hull, mowing the grass and a jingle package. Thatís the story Iíve heard and Iím sticking to it!

3. Tell us about your experience when you first arrived  at His Radio?

I couldnít believe they wanted me!!! We have such an encouraging staff. Everyone has made me feel welcome, it feels like home!  Our station headline is ďJesus is RealĒ, no matter what is happening with each other and personally, inside the building we remind each other of that truth constantly!

4. How are you able to apply previous experience to what you do now?

Iíve always been involved in some area of promotions at various stations, so that has been a big help. Iíve also got great record friends and Iím still able to keep in touch, this time from a promotions end. Since I have also programmed, I try and keep that mindset and apply it to all our promotions and also to my afternoon show

5. Where will future Christian radio air talent come from?

Great question, I am so thankful I had an opportunity to learn my craft and work hard by doing live overnights. The first year and a half in radio was so important for me, constantly working to get better and just doing radio night after night. They are out there, we just have to keep an eye/ear out for them. Social media is allowing ALL of us to become creative, to create ďVineĒ moments to stage and perform our ideas. We may see instead of hear the next group of Christian air talent.

6. What is your most memorable His Radio promotion so far?

The Family Reunion Contest.  We wanted to reunite a family and out of hundreds of entries, the winner was reunited with her dad after 17 years apart. Her husband or kids had never met her dad in person. I was at the airport when they landed and it was like Christmas morning, the excitement and joy! She sent an email that said:

ďI am so thankful to His Radio for giving me the opportunity to reunite with my dad. We had such an amazing visit! The relationship has been fully mended and we have started a new chapter.  The children absolutely adored him!  We all had a really hard time letting him go at the airport. I miss him terribly already but we are talking about 3 times a week now.Ē

That has been my favorite so far!!!

7. Generally speaking to the industry what are the biggest obstacles facing Christian radio today?

The music sounds great, the talent is awesome, I think the obstacles we need to watch out for are ones we create. Keep being creative, keep reaching others for Jesus and impacting our communities and donít settle, always strive to be the best!

8. There are still some big markets without a CCM station, why do you think that is?

Not really sure, but have a feeling that will continue to change,

9. What (if any) Christian radio stations do you consider as innovators today?

So many are making an impact in their communities for Jesus, Iíve got friends at small, medium and large market stations and I LOVE to hear their stories of what God is doing through their stations to reach people!!!

10. Where do you see Christian Radio in the next 5 years?

Steve Taylor talked at Momentum about integrating video and I really think youíll see video become a BIG part of radio. We are streaming our morning show and then posting show highlights on Rob and Leslieís Video Replay page at hisradio.com. Since June, over 500,000 videos have been downloaded and watched. It is really making a connection with our HIS radio friends who can watch video highlights when they want, on their smart phones, tablets and computers. Iím amazed at the hard work Rob Dempsey and everyone involved in our morning show put into the video side, not radio for TV, but radio enhanced with video.
