Inspired by a soft-drink company

Recently, I had the privilege to visit with some of the top leadership of a Fortune 500 company:  Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated in Charlotte, NC (COKE on the NASDAQ).  I was hosted by three wonderful organizations doing great things in their respective communities:  one is a for-profit called Polydeck Screen Corporation (http://www.polydeckscreen.com/mission.php) and two are not-for-profits called His Way At Work (http://hiswayatwork.com/transforming) and Corporate Chaplains of America (http://www.chaplain.org/index.php?file=page&page_id=76).

We had a wonderful morning session with all of the high-tech presentations you would expect and excellent presenters from Coke Consolidatedís executive team.  We then enjoyed and a delicious catered lunch including while viewing a moving DVD presentation regarding their global corporate social responsibility outreach program.  The afternoon then ended with a fruitful, open dialog & idea-storming session.  To sum it up, the day was everything you could hope for when visiting a companyís large corporate headquarters.  But, what I found to be the most inspiring part of my visit was the fact that everything discussed and lived out before me that day was packaged in a powerful one-sheet purpose statement.  Without going into too much detail, the first couple of lines read:  ďOur purpose:  to honor God in all we do.  To Serve others, To Pursue excellence, and To Grow profitably.Ē  Just for fun, hereís a copy of their current Mission Statement:  http://www.cokeconsolidated.com/doc/mission_statement.pdf

All of that to say this, no matter how we package our product, or bottle it in Coke Consolidatedís case, we MUST live it out.  We must seek to honor God in all we do as well.  And sometimes that can be a challenge.  Sometimes we get off course.  But in Godís merciful providence He gives us grace and resets the focus for us and places us on a path toward successful kingdom advancement.

You know this Scripture, but please read it with me one more time.  Itís Matthew 6:33, ďBut seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.Ē  Like Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated, letís seek to serve other in our organization, pursue excellence with the tasks placed before us, and grow and steward better our organizations profitability.

Very kindly and generously that day, I was given a copy of Coke Consolidatedís Purpose Statement.  I have it placed very prominently in my office to serve as a reminder of that incredible day.  I encourage you to take a moment and consider what your organizations purpose, mission, vision, and values are.  Oh, and by the way, it probably wouldnít be a bad idea if you enjoyed a Coke while you were at it.

Blessings on your efforts!
